Your Complete Window Measurement Guide

Accurate measurements are essential for custom curtains that fit perfectly and look beautiful. Follow our comprehensive guide to measure your windows like a professional.

What You'll Need

Gather these tools before you begin: Metal measuring tape (at least 8 feet), Step ladder, Pencil and paper, Helper (optional but recommended)

Step 1: Measure the Width

Measure your curtain rod width or the area where you plan to install it. For inside mount, measure the exact window frame width. For outside mount, extend 6-15 inches beyond each side of the frame for optimal light blocking and visual appeal.

Step 2: Determine Fullness

Multiply your rod width by 2-2.5 for proper fullness. This creates beautiful folds and draping. For example, a 60-inch rod needs 120-150 inches of total curtain width.

Step 3: Measure the Length

Measure from the rod to your desired endpoint: Sill length (to the window sill), Apron length (4-6 inches below the sill), Floor length (1/2 inch above the floor), Puddle length (2-6 inches pooling on the floor).

Step 4: Account for Header Style

Different header styles affect the finished length. Rod pocket and back tab styles add height above the rod. Grommet and pinch pleat styles hang from the rod itself.

Step 5: Calculate Panels Needed

Divide your total width (after fullness calculation) by the panel width you're ordering to determine how many panels you need. Round up to ensure adequate coverage.

For Soft Top & Grommet Heading Style

For these heading styles, we recommend 160-200% fullness. This means multiplying your rod width by 1.6 to 2 times. The fullness ratio determines how much fabric you need for beautiful draping and visual appeal.

Soft Top

Folded width: 50 inches
Stack Width: 10 inches
Per Panel Width: Divide your total width by the number of panels
Example: For a 100-inch rod with 2 panels, each panel would be 50 inches wide
Length Measurement: Measure from the rod to your desired endpoint
Fabric Fullness: 200% (multiply rod width by 2)
Stacking: Curtains stack to the sides when fully open

Grommet

Folded width: 50 inches
Stack Width: 10 inches
Per Panel Width: Divide your total width by the number of panels
Example: For a 100-inch rod with 2 panels, each panel would be 50 inches wide
Length Measurement: Measure from the rod to your desired endpoint
Grommet: 1.6 inches inner diameter
Fabric Fullness: 200% (multiply rod width by 2)
Stacking: Curtains stack to the sides when fully open

Determine The Width of Curtains

Pleated: Multiply rod width by 2-2.5 for full, luxurious folds
Soft Top: Multiply rod width by 1.6-2 for elegant draping
Grommet: Multiply rod width by 1.6-2 for modern, clean lines

Finding The Perfect Fit

Different lengths of curtains will give the room a different visual experience.
